We all tend to focus on energy efficiency in the winter
, but summer is just as important of a time to practice energy-saving tips. When you save on energy, you’re not only helping the environment — you’re also helping yourself, by saving money that would otherwise be spent on bills. See a couple ways in which you can effectively use your home, as well as your home’s air conditioning unit, to save this summer.
Work With Your Windows
When it comes to heating
, windows make all the difference. As it gets cooler at night, turn off your air conditioning, and open the windows to let the colder air in. Since it’ll be hot again during the day, close up the windows and draw the blinds to block the sun’s rays from passing through. This is a great and energy-efficient way to keep your house (and your bank account) cool.
Be Mindful of Appliances
Appliances, such as the oven, are huge sources of heat — great for winter, not so much for summer. On particularly hot days, be sure to try and avoid using any appliance that generates a lot of heat, including things like blow dryers, curling irons, and clothes irons. Stick with stove tops and microwaves in the kitchen, and your A/C unit will have a lot less work to do.
Watch the Water Heater
When it’s really hot out, a hot shower is nearly always the last idea that someone is entertaining. However, you don’t need to sacrifice your comfort completely from June ‘til September — turn down the water heater temps just a few degrees and you’ll still get hot water, but your energy bill won’t leave you feeling overcooked.
Use When You’re Home
If you’re on vacation or gone and the house will be empty all day (meaning there are also no pets at home), you don’t need to be blasting your air conditioning. Focus on cooling and comfort when you’re actually at home, in order to lessen your energy usage and to cut back on overall energy costs. If the thought alone of leaving your A/C off makes you break into a sweat, it’s OK — turn it on, but leave the temperature significantly higher than how you would normally have it (but still several degrees cooler than the outside temp).
